The Hidden Costs Of Atlanta Roofing

Do you know what one of the biggest hidden costs of Atlanta Roofing is? In fact, these hidden costs affect not only home owners who are looking to replace their roof, but it also affects the  roofing contractor as well as the roofing supply stores too.

What are we talking about?

Theft.

Did you know that as you read this article that roofing supply companies are being broken into and then trucks are being loaded up with tens of thousands of dollars of roofing materials? The ironic thing is that they very often use the roofing supply companies own fork lift to load their trucks with stolen roofing materials.

But that is OK because in a moment I will show you how to protect yourself from these hidden costs.

Why is there this sudden rash of roofing material thefts?

In this article Shingles prove to be a gold mine for thieves note what they say:

“Crooks nationwide have been stealing millions of dollars worth of shingles from companies this year, a sizable increase from years past. Previously, thieves would steal them from construction sites, but not on this level. They’re now getting ambitious, robbing warehouses — sometimes several semi-truckloads at a time — and hauling away hundreds of thousands of dollars in shingles. In Texas alone, at least $4 million worth have been stolen this year.”

In fact several roofing supply chains have been hit repeatedly. With construction as slow as it has been due to the economy, retailers can’t afford to keep taking hits like this.

What about right here in Atlanta Georgia?

Notice what the article goes on to say:

“In July, masked thieves were caught on tape in Atlanta sawing through ABC Supply Co.’s fenced-in warehouse and then using the yard’s forklift to load up a truck with shingles. Nearly $30,000 worth of materials were stolen and the thieves were never caught, said Bill Schuch, security chief for ABC Supply, one of the nation’s largest roofing supply distributors.”

So the question remains is why?

They are beginning to believe that this is some part of  a very organized operation, that is stockpiling the roofing materials in anticipation of hurricanes, tornadoes, hail storms etc that would create a huge demand for the stolen goods. Remember back when Hurricane Katrina hit a few years ago. Home depot was out of roofing materials. They had to be trucked in from all over the country. Many people saw this as an opportunity for some quick money and resorted to price gouging for roofing supplies.

Don’t forget that roofing shingles are petroleum based which means that as the price of oil soars… so do the prices for roofing shingles. As a result a black-market for cheap roofing materials is emerging for people that want affordable roofing materials.

The hidden costs of roofing

All of these thefts are forcing roofing supply companies to spend thousands of dollars on lighting, cameras and closed-circuit television equipment. They are also installing protective fencing, security guards and gps equipment for their vehicles.

Who is going to have to pay for this?

We all do. The cost is passed on to the roofing contractor who then passes it on to the home owner.

How to protect yourself from the hidden costs of roofing
