Excuse me … but your roof is about to cave in!
Can you think of an opening line that is going to scare senior citizens more than that? Scam artisits love to use fear and scare tactics to get the elderly into opening their checkbook to write a check to cover repairs.
The way it works is that they will canvass the neighborhood offering to give “free” roof inspections. Of course, they always find something wrong that needs to be repaired immediately or the roof will cave in on their heads.
Over priced repairs often use faulty or inferior materials to make the repairs. Sometimes the repairs are actually NEVER made!
Such scam artists take advantage of the fear and gullibility of the elderly.
How can you protect yourself?
1 – ASK for referrals from friends and family
2- Get at least 2 opinions before signing anything!

Is it possible to hire an honest roofing contractor in Atlanta and still get scammed?
Believe it or not… the answer is yes and your Atlanta roofing company can still be innocent. Allow me to explain.
So you have done your due diligence and have hired an Atlanta roofing contractor using the suggestions we have outlined in an earlier post. Well then how do you get scammed even though you have done your homework?
First, here at our Georgia roofing blog we have worked diligently to expose Atlanta roofing scams before. This is just another scam but with a unique twist. This is how it works:
1- A con artist sees that you are having roofing repairs done on your home. They simply ring your bell and tell you they need another $500.00 for material.
2- Then the artist disappears leaving a frustrated homeowner and the innocent roofing contractor to answer all of the questions.
What can you do to protect yourself?
1- Remember that a reliable roofing contractor will always put things in writing. You will give a down payment for materials and the balance is usually due upon completion. There should be no reason to pay for “extra materials” needed.
2- If someone ever comes to your door like this- then immediately ask for ID, then call the contractor and talk to him yourself.

A local contractor could face criminal charges for allegedly taking money from a customer and failing to do any work.
On February 10, 2009, victim William Heston signed a contract for $13,970 to have his roof redone. He wrote a check for the down payment to the contractor, which was cashed the following day, Heston told deputies.
Imagine for a moment that you have hired an Atlanta roofing company to reroof your home. You write a check for them to get the supplies and they promise to be back in a few days to begin the work. But now days turn into weeks and still no work has been done. Even worse… all you get are excuses from the roofing contractor.
What would you do? Read the rest of this entry »

GALVESTON Texas – A roofing laborer from Galveston Texas claims he was injured while working on a home because he was not provided with any safety equipment. Because of this he is suing his employer for a half of a million dollars. The laborer reports he had no experience in doing siding work and yet was supplied with tools and told to begin removing the wood siding from the house after the job was explained to him.

If you have roofing shingles that have been developed dark black stained then you will want to read this article carefully.
Is it mold and why is it developing on your Atlanta Roof? The culprit is known as “black algae”.
What is black algae, why does it develop and what can you do about it?

If you are thinking about reroofing your Atlanta home then you need to be careful about falling and hurting yourself. I just ran across this news report about a man in East Bridgewater that fell off a roof he was working on.
The news article goes on to say:
“A 40-year-old East Bridgewater man re-roofing a home on Sunday morning at 19 Pleasant Ave in East Bridgewater, fell about 15 feet from th e roof of that home, just before 10 o’clock in the morning.”
Now 15 feet doesn’t sound far to fall until y Read the rest of this entry »

Everyone is trying to save a dollar or two on their home improvements including their Atlanta roofing . With the loss of jobs and a sinking economy more and more laid of roofing workers and laborers are printing up business cards to announce to the world that they “are in business ” now.
They slap a magnetic sign on the back of their truck and voila… they are now in business. To make things worse we are seeing your everyday, “Tom, Dick and Harry” that may have done a little roofing in the past or maybe watched it on “This Old House” , who are now out their gunning for your business.
Here is the pitch:
“You buy the materials & we will supply the labor”.
I know it may sound inviting, but is it really as good of a deal as it sounds at first?
This is what we have been finding: Read the rest of this entry »

In the past we have discussed what to look for when choosing a Georgia roofing company. Today we will discuss several Atlanta roofing scams that you need to be aware of whenever considering an Atlanta roofing company to work with.
I’d say the biggest roofing shortcut is the “bait and switch.” In this case a contractor will sell you a specific product or up-sell some specific components and then use a less expensive product or leave a specific component out entirely.
Another short cut could involve Read the rest of this entry »
